The benefits of music

Music can lead to better learning. Doctors at Johns Hopkins recommend that you listen to music to stimulate your brain. Scientists know that listening to music engages your brain — they can see the active areas light up in MRI scans. Music also has a positive effect on your ability to memorize. Music can make you want to move — and the benefits of dancing are well documented. Scientists also know that listening to music can alter your breath rate, your heart rate, and your blood pressure, depending on the music’s intensity and tempo. In short,  music exerts a powerful influence on human beings. It can boost memory, build task endurance, lighten your mood, reduce anxiety and depression, stave off fatigue, improve your response to pain, and help you work out more effectively. Why settle for listening when you can make music? We have excellent music teachers in our area ready to get you started on your journey.

About us

Williamsburg Area Music Teachers

Affectionately known as “WAMT”, was established in 1981 by Ms. Jobie Dunkle, an extraordinary private piano teacher who lived and taught in Williamsburg for many years. She wanted local private music teachers to get together to provide performance opportunities for our students, as well as meet monthly to learn from each other in the areas of music, education and the business of running a studio—without always having to travel to Hampton or Newport News. This group has never drafted by-laws or affiliated with any other teacher group, but has faithfully executed our mission.
